Instead of a home warranty, get a Sears appliance warranty/service contract. It only covers appliances, obviously, but it works very well with few exceptions. They don't cover built-in fridges or under-counter ice makers, but they do cover washers, dryers, regular refrigerators, etc. It doesn't cover as much, but at least it actually works.
