Maybe dual farm Silver Knights (farm knights for shards and every 4k souls you get in the process you can buy one shard). Before Irithyll there are plenty of lootable large shards, but not terribly many reliable drop farms.
(The question refers to getting the large shards preferably before beating the Dancer).
