Between me and the dealer (when they did my free oil change) about 5 gallons of def had been added to my truck for the first 10k miles. At that time the 500 mile warning came on I was heading out on a 5k mile trip, so I filled it - took 4-4.5 gal, and it was definitely full. 3.5k into the trip (2.5k empty, 1k towing an 8k# TT) the 500 mile warning came on.
