When you change gear/glam, they will "break" and then the only thing you have to do is: go to that gearset's portrait in your portraits list -> Edit -> Reflect current gear -> Save. That's it. I literally had a portrait stop working for me last night. I did one duty as a dancer, continued msq, and the next duty as a dancer I did, the portrait didn't work. In the bottom right of the portraits menu, when you have a portrait selected there's a little toggle that says something like "use this portrait when gearset is equipped".
