As for the job names, they were changed to better reflect the roles of the classes, which aren't strictly the same as the classic jobs that they're similar too. Monk, for exemple, is an excellent job to start with. I'm replaying the whole game right now and got Vaan as a Monk at the start. He does decent damage, good combo rate (about 3 or 4 hits pretty often) and a surprising evasion rate in the early game. Balthier is my Bushi, which can also combo very well.
